Some people have lived in the same place their whole lives, and others are no strangers to hassles of relocating – mail forwarding, medical record transferring, and hiring packing services for moving. If you’re in a career or other life situation that requires a lot of moving, efficiency is everything to you. This blog is for those serial movers who want tips on organizing, packing, and moving to make the overall moving process as easy as possible.
1. Start Early
Packing is not something you can wait until the last minute to do. Talk about extreme stress. Moving is stressful no matter how prepared you are. But you can significantly reduce your stress by starting to pack early. If you have a short window between when you find out about the move and the day you move, start getting ready right when you find out. Don’t put it off.
Hopefully, you have at least a month’s notice (hopefully more) to start decluttering, cleaning, organizing, and packing. One of the most effective methods is to schedule these tasks into your daily calendar. Allot time each day and do it little by little so you don’t get stuck with the brunt right before you move. Choose times that work best for you and schedule a section of your home that you’ll tackle during each time slot.
2. Be Strategic About Your Packing Order
Be careful not to pack your most-used items first because that might force you to tear into a box you’ve already packed to find something you need. Have a strategy for your packing. Perhaps it’s the attic and garage first. Then the top shelves of your closets and those hidden kitchen cabinets and junk drawers. Not only will you most likely not need anything from these spaces, but this will be a great start to decluttering. You’ll find many things to throw away and donate in the process.
3. Declutter Your Heart Out
One of the positives of being a serial mover is the opportunity to declutter often. Plus, the more you move, the more you realize how good it sounds to become a minimalist. You don’t want more stuff to haul around; you want less. Procrastinating the decluttering until you arrive at your new home to declutter is the wrong move, and you will regret it. Get it out of the way so you are decluttered and ready to place everything in your new space. If you haven’t used something the entire time you have lived in your current home, consider getting rid of it. Moving is the perfect time to go through your stuff and only keep the essentials and the things that spark joy.
4. Pack Essentials with You
If you’re a seasoned mover, you’ve probably learned that you should keep some of the essentials with you at all times during the move for quick access, such as personal items like:
- Toiletries
- Clothes
- Chargers
- Important documents
- Overnight bag
- Some snacks
5. Don’t Take Clothes off the Hangers
If you don’t know about this hack, we are about to blow your mind and save you so much time. Don’t take your hung-up clothes off their hangers when you pack. You will just have to put them back on their hangers when you get to your new place. Instead, pack all of your clothes as they are and work in bundles to wrap a trash bag around your clothes with the hanger sticking up and the trash bag string tightly to protect your clothes and keep them in place. When you unpack, all you’ll have to do is hang your clothes up in your new closet and remove the trash bags.
6. Work with Different Size Boxes and Bins
You’ll want to have a variety of sizes of boxes and bins, especially when packing up your kitchen items. There are a lot of breakable items in the kitchen. Use a size box that keeps them secure and safe with very little room to shuffle around. Shallow bins work well for dishes and cups. They prevent dishes from shifting around and to keep the boxes from being too heavy. Consider putting small items in plastic containers with lids to keep them together and to make unpacking easier.
7. Hire Professional Movers
Once you move with a professional moving company, you will wonder why you didn’t do it that way all along. Hiring movers is a game changer and helps you free up time, reduce stress, and prevent back strain. Most people would agree that hiring movers is a worthwhile investment. Experienced movers are knowledgeable and efficient and do the job much faster than you would yourself.
