Our owner, Derek Martin, was a college kid moving on the side for extra money. He loved the work—diffusing stressful times in people’s lives with both courtesy and care. He liked the challenge of packing up valuables so that they would arrive in perfect condition at their destination. He learned how to work with peak efficiency so that moving would dominate as little of the client’s life as possible.
What he didn’t like were some serious shortcomings he saw in the moving industry: untrained staff carelessly packing people’s prized possessions, dismantling furniture willy nilly with no clear plan for reassembling it on the other end, mixing up loads so that boxes would arrive at the wrong destination—or not arrive at all.
He saw people hired off the street with no social graces or care for the customer experience. Many had never worked a day in the moving business before, and some even had criminal records.
He saw bait and switch tactics, where moving companies would offer one price and then tack on a bunch of extra costs at the end. He saw crews that showed up late or just didn’t show. He saw movers transporting valuables with the wrong equipment and supplies.
