9 Things You Should Do Before the Moving Company Arrives

As with most events on this great adventure we call life, preparation is always a key element to success. A successful move is no different. It starts with checking off all the right boxes, dotting all the I’s, and crossing all the T’s BEFORE your professional packers arrive.

Utah moving companies make moving more manageable, less stressful, and more efficient; it’s usually well worth the investment. But hiring a moving company doesn’t necessarily mean you’re off the hook and can kick your feet up from the sidelines. After all, it’s YOUR stuff.

Here’s a checklist of nine things to help you prepare for your movers.

1. Organize and Clean

Your mind will be clearer, the packing will be more accessible, and the unboxing will be much more joyous if you take the time to clean and organize laundry, dishes, tools, toiletries, and other personal items ahead of time. You will thank yourself later when you realize how much time you saved yourself.

2. Time to Purge

Purging feels so good before a move. Time to get rid of the baby bouncer since your baby is now 18. If you haven’t used your bowling shoes in the last 15 years, let’s face it: you’re never going to use them. The goal is to purge so you have less to move. It will feel so good to get rid of things you don’t use and donate or sell them to someone who will use them.

3. Declutter

Decluttering feels just as good as purging. And once you declutter for the movers, you’ll realize how much better your living space feels without clutter, and you’ll strive to be clutter-free in your new home. Moving will be faster and easier if countertops and tables are cleared off for boxes and moving supplies.

4. Communicate Clearly

Communication is vital when working with a moving company. Be upfront about your needs, expectations, and any special instructions. In addition, make sure you’re available if they have any questions. Communication goes both ways, so they must be available for you, and you must be available for them.

5. Back, Back it up!

Don’t forget to put your portable hard drives and cloud storage to use and back up all critical information on your computers, laptops, tablets, and other devices. This is an easy step to forget, but in this digital age, it’s as essential as ever.

6. Add a Marking to Boxes with High-Value Items

Add a unique mark to the boxes you want handled with extra care. It’s hard to trust someone with certain items, such as jewelry and other precious items which we recommend taking in your cars. For those highly valuable items that must go on the truck, such as the hand-carved clock passed down for five generations, make sure your packers mark the box so that it gets handled with care. They’ll also learn to pack it strategically.

7. Set Aside Items You’ll Move Yourself

You’ll want to set aside items in your cars, such as jewelry, toiletries, electronics, overnight bags, work stuff, and any hazardous items your movers won’t move. What a mess if all this stuff gets mixed in with the things in the moving truck. Put these items aside and pack them in boxes away from all the other items.

8. Use Labels to Organize Boxes

Label boxes and keep them in their designated rooms. Use signage in the rooms to make it clear and easy for your packers. Set them up for clarity and success. If any items switch rooms in the new house, mark them with their label. Don’t leave anything up to guessing. Be the master of your packing and use tags and signage to be ultra-organized.

9. Supply Refreshments

Brownies earn brownie points. Cookies create smiles. A cold glass of lemonade on a hot day is the ultimate refresher. Everyone loves to snack while working. Plus, it’s fuel for their bodies. It would be thoughtful to supply cold beverages and light snacks for the packing team. Maybe even order a pizza if the packing is during lunchtime. Whatever you have for your packers and movers, they’ll surely appreciate it.

Preparation will prevent headaches later. Go all in and be organized so you’re not spending the first year trying to get your life together in your new place. You will be frustrated if you’re scrambling through boxes wondering why the ice cream scooper is with your dog’s toys. Put in some work now, so the transition is seamless and organized later.
